Spa Review: Refresh Massage

Many of my clients always ask me what they can do to quickly recover from the dreaded yet appreciated feeling of soreness.

One tactic you can start off with is massage….ahh…. feels soooo goooood =) So if you can’t get someone like a significant other to help massage you (or if you’re like me, you’ve already exceeded the weekly quota of massages received from the bf and friends), then one place I recommend which is a great value is Refresh Massage, in the Ballston Common Mall across from the Sport & Health. How to make your kitchen smell like heaven

Last night we wrapped up filming Sunny’s video on how to make Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken (the healthy version). Oh man…did it smell good in the house!! When we finish editing it, we’ll put it on youtube and videojug.

Sunny, aka “my boo”, loves food and especially loves to teach people how to do one of his most favorite activities — cooking healthy meals (and yes, he is my private chef!!). He currently gives private lessons and teaches these classes for Arlington County Adult Education:
  • Cooking for the Busy Professional – Cooking tasty meals using techniques that will save time
  • Knife Skills – How to use that knife set of yours including maintenance, slicing, dicing, carving…etc…
  • Latin Cooking – Ropa Vieja (pulled beef), Black Beans, and more!
  • Men in the Kitchen – For men who want to get more comfortable with cooking and want to learn new easy recipes.
I cannot tell you how many times people have mentioned that Sunny should try out for Top Chef, the Next Food Network Star, and all those other cooking reality shows!! I’ve been telling him for years that he has so much charisma and a great way of teaching that he needs to have his own show on Food Network =P But first, local TV and the web!!! I would gladly be his booking agent too, and then we can add a fitness segment with me so you can learn how to cook healthy meals and get some exercise too!!!

Cooking at home is a great way to save some money and control how many calories you take in! One of the key reasons why Sunny and I can stay in good shape is because we eat at home almost all the time, and that means we know what’s really in the food. Sunny used to eat out all the time for work, and since he started cooking more at home a year ago, he’s lost 20lbs. We have people over to enjoy a casual lunch or dinner with us, and this encourages our friends to eat healthier too!

Check out Sunny’s hands-on classes and see if you’d like to learn how to make some yummy, good-for-you meals. You better sign up fast since his classes tend to have waiting lists. Due to the demand, he’s had to open up extra sections! The classes are a great value, and yes, you get to eat (and take home) the food too!

Hobble hobble, how I ended up in the hospital

Hobble hobble — that’s my gait for the last couple of days. How did I end up with this gait? Well, an accident happened on the way to teach Yoga.

On Thursday, as I left my home, I slipped on my flip flops and grabbed my Yoga mat so that I could run the Yoga class with staff at Washington-Lee High School or WLHS (the staff are so awesome by the way, they even had gotten me a x-mas gift!). I was wearing socks with the flip flops, so as I walked to class I was amusing myself with how the high school students might perceive my fashion faux pas.

So upon arrival at WLHS I grabbed the handle connected to the front door of the building, and yeah, you know what’s coming, I swung open the heavy glass & steel door and my left big toe took a hit from the bottom corner of the door.

“YEEEOW-OUCH!!” I cried. Oh man, that’s gonna hurt more in a second. I could feel my toenail ripped open then. Uh oh, here comes the blood.

I hobbled over to the front office and pleaded for help from Dawn (from yoga) and MaryLib (from Zumba), who both were in the office. At first they didn’t understand why I looked so distressed, but then they saw the blood oozing out from my left sock, and they immediately had me sit down. The nurse came and started treating the foot.

“Call my boyfriend Sunny,” I said to MaryLib, “since he can still teach Yoga!”

MaryLib gives me a concerned look. “How about we call Sunny so he can take you to the hospital? We’ll cancel Yoga class.”

Oh yeah, that was a better idea. I thought. MaryLib asked me for his number and since I was so distressed, I couldn’t blurt out the right numbers. Crazy huh. I had his number on speed dial and finally gave her my cellphone to call him. Sunny later mentioned that it was a good idea to call from my cell, because he normally doesn’t answer unknown numbers when he’s cooking. Dang!

“Aw, she’s still looking after her clients,” said someone. I was already doubled over at this point and had to start sobbing so I could tolerate the pain. I would have wailed like a banshee if I hadn’t been around my clients!!

My teeth started chattering, sweat drenched my body, and the shivers took over, all at the same time. Having taken first aid class before, I knew I was in the state of shock. “I don’t know how women give birth, this already hurts so badly,” I exclaimed.

Dawn replied, “It’s called an epidural!” I sure wish I had gotten one at that moment!

Since we live three blocks away from the school, Sunny ran over quickly and carried me into the car. We went to urgent care at Arlington Hospital and we made a dramatic entrance, with me in his arms. The staff led us straight to the treatment room. Now that’s a way to skip the line!

Be prepared to fill out paperwork when you end up in the hospital. They can’t treat you until it’s completed. Heck, they even needed my medical insurance card but I don’t normally carry it with me!

To make this long story short, the doctors gave me a ton of local anesthesia, which I loved, but still couldn’t numb my toe enough to be able to pull out my toenail (which was loose) without pain. They were perplexed at how resistant my toe was to anesthesia. They had never seen a patient like that before.

Is that a good or a bad thing??

So, I didn’t have to go through all that needle jabbing if I had listened to my first instinct, which was to leave the toenail alone and just let it heal by itself. Two and a half hours later, the hospital discharged me and sent me off with a bandaged toe and antibiotic prescription. The doctor said that if I see red streaks on my foot near my wound or if I get a fever, that would be a sign that I have an infection and would need treatment immediately. Whoa.

I’m so grateful for having received so much care from MaryLib, Dawn, the WLHS nurse, Sunny, and the Arlington Hospital staff. So many people got involved with caring for me when one big toe got injured!

And a foot injury really messes up your gait. Your gait, or how you walk, affects how the rest of your body moves from the bottom up. When you body is out of alignment because your gait has changed, different muscles in your body may or may not fire like they normally do. This can lead to muscle weaknesses or overuse, and then joint pain. The joint pain can happen anywhere, from the ankles, knees, hips, and up. A messed up gait is serious business. So although I can still walk without pain, I won’t be doing much of that this weekend so that I don’t mess up other muscles and joints in my body!

Hobble hobble. Check out my list of lessons learned!

Coco’s Top Lessons learned

1) Use I.C.E. — rescue workers are trained to look up in your cellphone first under the name I.C.E, which stands for In Case of Emergency. I learned this in CPR class. So get your cellphone out now, and put your emergency contacts on speed dial. Not only that, but put I.C.E. next to your contact’s name, like this:
I.C.E. 1 Boyfriend Sunny Singh (priority one since he can get to me first)
I.C.E 2 Mom
I.C.E 3 Brother Jerry
Rescue workers need to know the name of your emergency contact and which person they should call first. Give them three options just in case. Do this now or I’ll reach through the computer screen and do it for you =P No joke.
2) Call your emergency contact using YOUR phone first. In the age of telemarketing, I know a lot of people who don’t answer phone calls from unknown numbers. And don’t assume you can give out your emergency contact’s phone number correctly (I couldn’t!). You could be in shock when an accident happens (like I was), and may be incoherent too.
3) Carry your medical insurance card & ID with you at all times. Our healthcare system requires us to fill out forms first before we get treated. ‘Nuff said.
4) Don’t open large heavy doors onto your unprotected toes!!!!
Please implement these tips and share them with your loved ones. They’re so important to carry out and give you some peace of mind.

Fiesta with the CocoFitness Family

Wow, la vita è bella (life is beautiful in Italian) — and I was reminded of it this past Sunday during our CocoFitness Potluck Fiesta. Forty fitness & dance enthusiasts got together in Arlington, VA to dine, drink and salsa dance in the name of living healthier and happier!

I couldn’t have dreamed for a better night.
A brief run through of how the evening went (I’m a lover of lists, as you can see!)
  • We dined & wined with wonderful, healthy, vegetarian, ethnic, homemade dishes brought by everyone. I was impressed!!
  • Some of our volunteers walked around serving mojitos (JZ & Lina), tandoori chicken (Sunny), and rosa de jamaica (Honduran Carlos)
  • Zumba lovers, my personal training clients, some friends and family mixed and mingled while wearing their nametags while our pro photographer (El Salvadorian Carlos) documented the night
  • Karan (from India), Jaytza (from Puerto Rico), and Julian (from Ghana) shared their fitness and weight loss success stories!
  • Amy and Coco did a little salsa number that was choreographed just for the party!! See how special you guys are?! Amy was an excellent lead, might I say.
  • We played a little game where everyone had to arrange themselves in chronological order of when they Zumba-ed or trained with me. We turned this into a conga line and the dance party began!
  • Everyone started dancing, and the salsa lovers took to the floor.
  • We all went home full & fulfilled from having made so many new friends!
Some things I’m grateful for from the party (more lists!)
How cooperative & supportive everyone can be to make a fiesta like this so successful. We all pitched in for the cooking & cleanup. We partied from 6:30pm-11pm!! I couldn’t have asked for better teamwork! You guys rock!!! So many people asked how they can help.
How far so many people in the CocoFitness Family have come in their fitness journey. Jaytza and Karan talked about losing more than 50lbs in 2008. Congratulations!!!! Besitos from me! They continue to workout with me during Zumba class and one-on-one personal training!
How diverse our Arlington Zumba meetup group & training clients are:
  • having lived in six continents
  • being fluent in many many languages (among them being French, Papiamento, Panjabi, Malay, Portuguese, Italian)
  • everyone knowing so many dance forms that we were able to try different rhythms during the night (samba, bhangra, african dance, merengue). So many people brought their iPods so we can share our favorite World music with each other!
  • all ages ranging from 20-70
  • all occupations such as doctors, social workers, stay at home moms, students, reporters, and lawyers.
– How very few people knew each other but by the end of the night, everyone felt comfortable with each other quickly and were exchanging contact information
– For all the effort everyone put into making the wonderful, homemade dishes. The chocolate-dipped strawberries from KC banished quickly! You need to bring more next time!!
– All of our cooks, including Sunny and JZ, for sweating all day Saturday and Sunday to feed us =)
I’m blessed to be associated with all of you — you played a significant role in CocoFitness’s success so far, and we haven’t even reached 1 year old as a fitness family! We’re going to end up partying too much if they’re always this fun =P Let’s continue having a great time while staying fit for life!

Let it snow! The hardcore Zumbadores

So, as y’all know, yesterday we had our first snowfall of the season. Schools were closed, people didn’t go to work, traffic was bad with the icy roads and wintry mix…..

But a great group of very dedicated dancers overcame the bad weather and still came to Zumba class with me! It was so great that we had so many people in class!

And I rewarded them with the most KICKBUTT class we’ve had this year. We got motivated by songs from Beyonce, Juan Luis Guerra (Merengue), Frankie Negron (Salsa). I was wearing a heart rate monitor and I burned 550 calories during class. Alicea was also wearing a heart rate monitor and I wouldn’t doubt she went way over my numbers. She had to leave class early last night so I just emailed her this morning to find out how many calories she really burned!!!

Since I instruct Zumba classes all the time and I’m more used to the workouts, burning 550 calories during class is among the lower numbers you can expect to burn during class. But it really depends on how hard you dance during class. You can use low-impact dance moves and still get your butt kicked!

I’ve been working on a chair dance routine for y’all so that you can have a nice little dance you can do on Valentine’s night for your man (or for your partner for the night!). Heck, you don’t even have to wait for Valentine’s Day, do it anytime!! I bet you think that Sunny, my boyfriend, is one lucky lucky man (and yes he is!). We’ll probably do this sexy chair dance on a Sunday (when there are no guys in class), since we’ve got easier access to a set of chairs then. I’ll be sure to give you moves that will make you blush and your heart race =)

At the end of class last night, Tracy, one of our Meetup members, said some really nice words about me to the Zumba newbies. She said that she’s been to many Zumba classes in the area and that I’m the best instructor. She actually belongs to a health club where she has access to free Zumba classes all the time, but she’d still rather come to mine since I motivate her the best. I swear I didn’t pay her to say that ;-) Actually, we have a good number of people who can Zumba for free through their health club memberships, but stick with Coco. So I’m so lucky to have such loyal people in my class!!

So, one of the lessons learned last night was:
Don’t use bad weather as an excuse to keep you from staying fit. Walk or metro to class to stay off the icy roads. If you decide to stay home when the weather is bad, do as my other clients did last night. Use your Zumba DVDs and party at home!!

Abrazos (Hugs),

Coco
