Many of my clients always ask me what they can do to quickly recover from the dreaded yet appreciated feeling of soreness.

How to make your kitchen smell like heaven
Last night we wrapped up filming Sunny’s video on how to make Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken (the healthy version). Oh man…did it smell good in the house!! When we finish editing it, we’ll put it on youtube and videojug.
- Cooking for the Busy Professional – Cooking tasty meals using techniques that will save time
- Knife Skills – How to use that knife set of yours including maintenance, slicing, dicing, carving…etc…
- Latin Cooking – Ropa Vieja (pulled beef), Black Beans, and more!
- Men in the Kitchen – For men who want to get more comfortable with cooking and want to learn new easy recipes.
Cooking at home is a great way to save some money and control how many calories you take in! One of the key reasons why Sunny and I can stay in good shape is because we eat at home almost all the time, and that means we know what’s really in the food. Sunny used to eat out all the time for work, and since he started cooking more at home a year ago, he’s lost 20lbs. We have people over to enjoy a casual lunch or dinner with us, and this encourages our friends to eat healthier too!
Check out Sunny’s hands-on classes and see if you’d like to learn how to make some yummy, good-for-you meals. You better sign up fast since his classes tend to have waiting lists. Due to the demand, he’s had to open up extra sections! The classes are a great value, and yes, you get to eat (and take home) the food too!
Hobble hobble, how I ended up in the hospital
Hobble hobble — that’s my gait for the last couple of days. How did I end up with this gait? Well, an accident happened on the way to teach Yoga.
On Thursday, as I left my home, I slipped on my flip flops and grabbed my Yoga mat so that I could run the Yoga class with staff at Washington-Lee High School or WLHS (the staff are so awesome by the way, they even had gotten me a x-mas gift!). I was wearing socks with the flip flops, so as I walked to class I was amusing myself with how the high school students might perceive my fashion faux pas.
So upon arrival at WLHS I grabbed the handle connected to the front door of the building, and yeah, you know what’s coming, I swung open the heavy glass & steel door and my left big toe took a hit from the bottom corner of the door.
I hobbled over to the front office and pleaded for help from Dawn (from yoga) and MaryLib (from Zumba), who both were in the office. At first they didn’t understand why I looked so distressed, but then they saw the blood oozing out from my left sock, and they immediately had me sit down. The nurse came and started treating the foot.
“Call my boyfriend Sunny,” I said to MaryLib, “since he can still teach Yoga!”
MaryLib gives me a concerned look. “How about we call Sunny so he can take you to the hospital? We’ll cancel Yoga class.”
“Aw, she’s still looking after her clients,” said someone. I was already doubled over at this point and had to start sobbing so I could tolerate the pain. I would have wailed like a banshee if I hadn’t been around my clients!!
My teeth started chattering, sweat drenched my body, and the shivers took over, all at the same time. Having taken first aid class before, I knew I was in the state of shock. “I don’t know how women give birth, this already hurts so badly,” I exclaimed.
Dawn replied, “It’s called an epidural!” I sure wish I had gotten one at that moment!
Since we live three blocks away from the school, Sunny ran over quickly and carried me into the car. We went to urgent care at Arlington Hospital and we made a dramatic entrance, with me in his arms. The staff led us straight to the treatment room. Now that’s a way to skip the line!
Be prepared to fill out paperwork when you end up in the hospital. They can’t treat you until it’s completed. Heck, they even needed my medical insurance card but I don’t normally carry it with me!
Is that a good or a bad thing??
So, I didn’t have to go through all that needle jabbing if I had listened to my first instinct, which was to leave the toenail alone and just let it heal by itself. Two and a half hours later, the hospital discharged me and sent me off with a bandaged toe and antibiotic prescription. The doctor said that if I see red streaks on my foot near my wound or if I get a fever, that would be a sign that I have an infection and would need treatment immediately. Whoa.
I’m so grateful for having received so much care from MaryLib, Dawn, the WLHS nurse, Sunny, and the Arlington Hospital staff. So many people got involved with caring for me when one big toe got injured!
And a foot injury really messes up your gait. Your gait, or how you walk, affects how the rest of your body moves from the bottom up. When you body is out of alignment because your gait has changed, different muscles in your body may or may not fire like they normally do. This can lead to muscle weaknesses or overuse, and then joint pain. The joint pain can happen anywhere, from the ankles, knees, hips, and up. A messed up gait is serious business. So although I can still walk without pain, I won’t be doing much of that this weekend so that I don’t mess up other muscles and joints in my body!

Fiesta with the CocoFitness Family
Wow, la vita è bella (life is beautiful in Italian) — and I was reminded of it this past Sunday during our CocoFitness Potluck Fiesta. Forty fitness & dance enthusiasts got together in Arlington, VA to dine, drink and salsa dance in the name of living healthier and happier!
- We dined & wined with wonderful, healthy, vegetarian, ethnic, homemade dishes brought by everyone. I was impressed!!
- Some of our volunteers walked around serving mojitos (JZ & Lina), tandoori chicken (Sunny), and rosa de jamaica (Honduran Carlos)
- Zumba lovers, my personal training clients, some friends and family mixed and mingled while wearing their nametags while our pro photographer (El Salvadorian Carlos) documented the night
- Karan (from India), Jaytza (from Puerto Rico), and Julian (from Ghana) shared their fitness and weight loss success stories!
- Amy and Coco did a little salsa number that was choreographed just for the party!! See how special you guys are?! Amy was an excellent lead, might I say.
- We played a little game where everyone had to arrange themselves in chronological order of when they Zumba-ed or trained with me. We turned this into a conga line and the dance party began!
- Everyone started dancing, and the salsa lovers took to the floor.
- We all went home full & fulfilled from having made so many new friends!
- having lived in six continents
- being fluent in many many languages (among them being French, Papiamento, Panjabi, Malay, Portuguese, Italian)
- everyone knowing so many dance forms that we were able to try different rhythms during the night (samba, bhangra, african dance, merengue). So many people brought their iPods so we can share our favorite World music with each other!
- all ages ranging from 20-70
- all occupations such as doctors, social workers, stay at home moms, students, reporters, and lawyers.
Let it snow! The hardcore Zumbadores
So, as y’all know, yesterday we had our first snowfall of the season. Schools were closed, people didn’t go to work, traffic was bad with the icy roads and wintry mix…..
And I rewarded them with the most KICKBUTT class we’ve had this year. We got motivated by songs from Beyonce, Juan Luis Guerra (Merengue), Frankie Negron (Salsa). I was wearing a heart rate monitor and I burned 550 calories during class. Alicea was also wearing a heart rate monitor and I wouldn’t doubt she went way over my numbers. She had to leave class early last night so I just emailed her this morning to find out how many calories she really burned!!!
Since I instruct Zumba classes all the time and I’m more used to the workouts, burning 550 calories during class is among the lower numbers you can expect to burn during class. But it really depends on how hard you dance during class. You can use low-impact dance moves and still get your butt kicked!
At the end of class last night, Tracy, one of our Meetup members, said some really nice words about me to the Zumba newbies. She said that she’s been to many Zumba classes in the area and that I’m the best instructor. She actually belongs to a health club where she has access to free Zumba classes all the time, but she’d still rather come to mine since I motivate her the best. I swear I didn’t pay her to say that
Actually, we have a good number of people who can Zumba for free through their health club memberships, but stick with Coco. So I’m so lucky to have such loyal people in my class!!
